Bar Exam Study Schedules

Sample schedules to structure your bar prep

How Much Time Do You Need?

Most successful bar takers dedicate 400-600 hours of study time. For a 10-week prep period, that's roughly 8-10 hours per day, 6 days per week.

The right schedule depends on your situation:

  • 8 weeks: Intensive full-time study, ideal for recent graduates
  • 10 weeks: Standard full-time schedule with some flexibility
  • 12+ weeks: Better for those working or with other commitments

8-Week Intensive Schedule

This schedule requires 50-60 hours per week.

Weeks 1-3: Foundation

  • Watch all lecture videos for each subject
  • Complete assigned readings and outlines
  • Begin light MBE practice (25-50 questions/day)

Weeks 4-5: Practice Phase

  • Increase MBE to 100+ questions/day
  • Write 2-3 essays per day
  • Complete 1-2 MPTs per week

Weeks 6-7: Simulation

  • Full practice exams under timed conditions
  • Review weak areas identified in practice
  • Continue heavy MBE drilling

Week 8: Final Review

  • Review high-yield rules and outlines
  • Light practice to maintain sharpness
  • Rest before exam days

10-Week Standard Schedule

This schedule requires 40-50 hours per week.

Weeks 1-4: Foundation

Cover all substantive material with moderate practice.

Weeks 5-7: Practice Phase

Heavy emphasis on MBE questions and essay writing.

Weeks 8-9: Simulation

Full practice exams and targeted review.

Week 10: Final Review

High-yield review and rest.

Studying While Working

If you can't study full-time, extend your timeline to 12-16 weeks. Key adjustments:

  • Study in the morning before work when possible
  • Use commute time for audio lectures or flashcards
  • Dedicate full weekends to intensive study
  • Take time off work for the final 2-3 weeks if possible

Daily Structure

A typical full-time study day:

  • 8:00-12:00: Lectures and substantive review (4 hours)
  • 12:00-1:00: Lunch break
  • 1:00-4:00: MBE practice questions (3 hours)
  • 4:00-4:30: Break
  • 4:30-6:30: Essay writing or MPT practice (2 hours)

Take one full day off per week. Rest is essential for retention and mental health.
