What Is the Bar Exam?

The bar exam is the licensing exam required to practice law in the United States. Each state administers its own bar exam, though most use the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE), which allows score portability between participating jurisdictions.

Passing the bar exam demonstrates that you have the minimum competency required to practice law and protect the interests of clients. It's a challenging test, but with proper preparation, it's absolutely achievable.

Exam Format

The bar exam typically spans two days and includes three components:

Multistate Bar Examination (MBE)

A 200-question multiple choice exam covering seven subjects. You have 6 hours (3 hours per 100-question session) to complete it. This portion accounts for 50% of your UBE score.

Multistate Essay Examination (MEE)

Six 30-minute essays testing your ability to analyze legal issues and apply the law. This accounts for 30% of your UBE score.

Multistate Performance Test (MPT)

Two 90-minute tasks that test practical lawyering skills. You'll receive a file and library and complete a realistic legal task. This accounts for 20% of your UBE score.

Subjects Tested

The MBE tests seven subjects:

  • Civil Procedure - Rules governing civil litigation
  • Constitutional Law - Federal constitutional rights and powers
  • Contracts - Agreement formation, performance, and remedies
  • Criminal Law & Procedure - Crimes and constitutional protections
  • Evidence - Rules governing admissibility
  • Real Property - Land ownership and interests
  • Torts - Civil wrongs and remedies

The MEE may also test: Business Associations, Conflict of Laws, Family Law, Trusts & Estates, and Secured Transactions.

Study Timeline

Most students dedicate 8-10 weeks of full-time study to bar preparation. Here's a typical breakdown:

  • Weeks 1-4: Learn the substantive law. Focus on understanding rules and concepts.
  • Weeks 5-7: Practice application. Heavy focus on MBE questions and essay writing.
  • Weeks 8-10: Simulate exam conditions. Full practice exams and targeted review of weak areas.

BARBRI's Personal Study Plan adapts to your schedule and learning pace, ensuring you cover everything you need.
